The story of this collection began in 2024 at Prague’s Vinohrady Theatre, the city’s second largest stage. Commissioned to score the 30th-anniversary production of Carlo Goldoni’s masterpiece, Le baruffe chiozzotte, Tolouie was captivated by the satirical energy of Goldoni’s seaside brawls, the chaotic charm of the Italian coast, and the modern interpretation of the play. Mirroring Goldoni’s spirit of innovation, Tolouie moved away from a traditional “theatre score,” instead stripping working-class lyrics from their historical melodies to transform them into layered, multi-track compositions. The result is a sound as unpredictable as the salt-air bustle of real life – an interpretation that outgrew the stage to become the album, Ci vediamo, Goldoni!
Fuelling this evolution, Tolouie treats old dialects – Sicilian, Neapolitan, Sardinian, and Spanish influenced Venetian – as rhythmic engines rather than museum pieces. This energy vibrates through every track, from the soul-baring “Serenata della spiaggia” to the festive turbulence of “La Baldoria.” His vocals remain a powerhouse lead instrument, shifting effortlessly from percussive intensity to his peculiar, Middle-Eastern inspired timbre.
The album’s signature sound is anchored by a bold technical fusion: Tolouie adopts the mandola’s
voice but replaces the traditional plectrum with the rigorous fingerstyle of the Persian setar. By using the sharp precision of the index-finger stroke to strike the strings, he creates a sound that remains Venetian in spirit while delivering a biting clarity reimagined for a contemporary ear.
For Shahab Tolouie, however, the project isn’t just a technical experiment, it’s a conversation across time. “The title means ‘See you, Goldoni!’ It is my nod to the maestro across the centuries,” he explains. “It is a way of saying: ‘I see your characters, but I will tell their story through my own heritage and craft.’” The album features ten tracks on 180g heavyweight vinyl and CD. The cover art blends Tolouie’s sketch with original typography, acting as a portal to the Vinohrady stage – a final tribute to the project’s theatrical roots as it evolves into a standalone work.
